Costa Rica Surf Adventures Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need to Arrange Transportation?
No, transportation to and from the Liberia International Airport is included. Transportation to and from the beach is also included. We provide needed transportation throughout your trip.

Is internet access available?
Yes, a computer with internet access is available for your use.

Are the rooms air-conditioned?
All accommodations are air conditioned

Do I need a passport to travel to Costa Rica?
Yes, you MUST have a passport and anyone (including minors) traveling with you also needs a passport. Contact the U.S. Department of State to obtain a passport.

What should I bring?
A relaxed attitude and a willingness to have fun. If you mean clothes, light airy shirts and pants with sandals for the day and some warmer clothing for the night as it can get a little cool at night. Of course, your medications, toiletries, swim suits and sun block are a must. Spending money for groceries, dining and gifts (for the folks back home) is always a good idea. Travelers checks and American Dollars are accepted almost everywhere. We have a great assortment of new surfboards on hand but intermediate or Advanced surfers may want to bring the boards they're already comfortable riding. Women should bring a pair of board shorts for surfing. Costa Rica Surf Adventures supplies rash guards.

Do I need to know Spanish?
You don't need to know Spanish. Your guides and instructors are fluent English speakers and almost all Costa Ricans speak at least a little English. However, knowing a little Spanish will only help to enhance your experience during this exotic adventure.

Are the locals friendly?
Local Costa Ricans (Ticos and Ticas) are very friendly. The welcoming spirit permeates Costa Rican culture which might explain why tourism is such a huge part of the economy.

Can I Wear Contacts While Surfing?
Yes, but if you open your eyes while under water there is a possible to lose them. We recommend wearing disposable contacts in your surf sessions and other water related exclusions.

Do I need to know how to swim?
In a word YES! You don't need to be an expert swimmer, but you need to be comfortable in water that may be above your head. The paddle stroke used in surfing is very similar to the "front crawl" swim stroke (minus the kicking). Anyone who will be participating in physical activity should seek the advice of a doctor prior to doing so. Our recommendations are not medical opinions, they are for information only

What exercises will help my surfing?
Surfing is one of the few "Complete" sports in that it uses almost every muscle group in the body, plus its aerobic. So in addition to enjoying a super fun and exhilarating adventure, you'll leave Costa Rica Surf Adventures looking more fit than when you arrived! Ok, back to the question...any aerobic exercise will prepare you for surfing: swimming, jogging/running, biking. Yoga and high repetition -low weight workouts are also beneficial. Beginner surfers don't need to be overly concerned with conditioning but we do expect advanced surfers to be in good condition. Anyone who will be participating in physical activity should seek the advice of a doctor prior to doing so. Our recommendations are not medical opinions, they are for information only.

Can I be injured while surfing?
Yes, as in snow skiing, water skiing, skateboarding, running, soccer, football, etc. you can be injured while surfing. We do take every practical precaution to ensure the safety of our students by including extensive "on-beach" instruction, soft boards and a very 4-to-1 student to teacher ratio. Our instructors were/are ocean lifeguards and have extensive and on-going life saving training. We are happy to report there has never been an injury during any of our lessons. Advanced surfers and anyone free surfing does so completely at their own risk. Anyone who will be participating in physical activity should seek the advice of a doctor prior to doing so. Our recommendations are not medical opinions, they are for information only.
